Motors
To add a motor to a car, you'll need a motor, a battery pack, and some technic axles/gears to put on the motor. Those pieces can be found in regular Technic pieces, or the simple machines kit above, or in some of the LEGO education kits like this $99 set:
Once you can sign up for a JrFLL team ($25 -- open on August 1), you can get a decent price on an overall resource kit with axles, gears, beams, etc. -- don't know the price yet, though.
